NEREC Summer Fellows Program at KAIST

My name is Yunhwa Choi, program manager of Nonproliferation Education and Research Center at KAIST.

On behalf of Director Man-Sung Yim, Professor and Head of Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST, I send the message to you.

Last year, the Korean government established an academic think tank called “Nuclear Non-Proliferation Education & Research Center (NEREC)”.

The Center has three objectives: (1) to train and nurture non-proliferation human resources, (2) to conduct non-proliferation policy research combining technical expertise and policy insights, and (3) to lead discussions on the peaceful use of nuclear technology and various aspects of nuclear non-proliferation.

As an important part of the center’s program we hold a Summer Fellows Program for undergraduate college students. The program is widely open to any qualified students, in particular to Korean-Americans interested in international issues concerning the use of nuclear technology. Last year, around twenty excellent students from the States, Singapore and Korea had a wonderful summer time by studying and doing research on nuclear nonproliferation and experiencing Korean culture.

As the head of the Korean Student Association at Yale, I would greatly appreciate your promoting this program to help us find the best candidates.

The duration of the Summer Fellows Program will be 6 weeks (June 29th - August 7th ) with the participation of selected college students both from South Korea and abroad. The program covers basic education in nuclear security and nonproliferation and includes various activities as following:

- Lectures and seminars

- Group research work with NEREC Fellow students

- Participation and poster presentation at the NEREC Conference on Nuclear Nonproliferation

- Field trips to Seoul and Gyeongju

- Korean cultural events

We hope to receive approximately fifteen Fellows this year.

While the program does not cover travel costs, NEREC covers lodging for 6 weeks, and all costs related to field trips, cultural events and conference participation. The benefits amount to approximately $2,500.

Interested students are encouraged to complete and submit their application via e-mail: nerec@kaist.ac.kr

Submitting the following by the deadline of February 13, 2015 will suffice the application.
